The rare unicorns of Africa

A pair of unknown rhinos from central Africa

The African continent is characterized by its megafauna, with enormous and imposing species such as rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes, zebras, etc. and also for their large predators such as lions, wild dogs, and hyenas, but there is still a lot to discover, among them we have several mysterious animals, such as 2 cases that we will see today, Let's see what these cases are, thank you for reading, I hope you support, let's get started.

Liberian dwarf rhinoceros

It is a supposed pygmy rhinoceros, presumably native to the mountains of western Liberia.

This was reported for the first and only time by the German explorer Hans Schomburgk, during his exploration in Liberia, almost contemporary with the discovery of the pygmy hippopotamus in 1913, The local Kru people told him about another pygmy animal, a rhinoceros, that lived in the mountains, Schomburgk searched for this animal, but could not find it.

Schomburgk initially suspected that the pygmy rhinoceros could be the giant forest pig, a famously elusive animal found in Liberia, but Kru clearly distinguished the pygmy rhinoceros from this animal, some zoologists have theorized about its existence, also seeking to explain the process that led the Liberian hippopotamus to small size, but however its existence could never be proven.

       Congo Ngoubou

Here is a particular fact, and that is that this creature is forgotten by zoology and cryptozoology at the same time, overshadowed by things even more meaningless than anything.

The ngoubou is a rather strange animal, as it is described as having the size of an ox, but it also has characteristics of a rhinoceros, possessing the peculiarity of having 6 horns on its head, in addition to being a competitor with elephants for territory, although other descriptions also say that it has a single sharp horn on its nose, Like a rhinoceros, its reproductive behavior has been described in part, emphasizing that it is a mammal, since it is said that it gives birth to live young and occasionally adults with young have been observed, these also having amphibious behaviors, being able to hide by submerging underwater, like a hippopotamus.

Several zoologists, naturalists and members of scientific expeditions have managed to spot the creature on more than one occasion, gather their information or see a dead specimen, but unfortunately none of them have been successful in obtaining a live specimen, but all the descriptions confirm that, This beast is nothing more than a possible unclassified relative of rhinos, and since its last sighting was in the 2000s it may be very plausible that it still exists.

A curious fact is that when the missionary Pierre Sima 2 days after he arrived at Ndelele ate meat of what the natives said was ngoubou meat, and apparently it had a pork flavor, in addition, cave paintings have been found that reveal an apparent relationship with rhinoceroses if they exist.

Conclusions of the case

Well, as always I like to give my opinion, it is very possible that these cases are valid, the first, although the search for the first did not result, there may have been a pygmy rhinoceros adapted to the jungles and about the second, It is possible that some animal with such characteristics could live in Africa until recent times without being detected, but due to the few conditions that allow in-depth investigations, it is difficult to verify.

As always we are impartial here, and the reader has the last word.
