A hilarious armadillo that doesn't exist

The case of the giant armadillo of Argentina

Usually when we talk about fraud we always think that they are not in the field of science and that they are usually present in other investigative areas but that is not the case, In paleontology and biology there have been several cases of fraud, some well elaborated and others that are quickly refuted, but usually there are some that pass into posterity due to their structure and dissemination, such as the case that we will see today, thank you for reading, I hope you support and without further ado, we begin.

The giant armadillo fraud in Patagonia

This case occurred on October 7, 1967, when the then magazine Science News reported the rediscovery of a "giant armadillo" that was believed to be extinct, 2.0 meters long and 2200 pounds in weight, since it had been captured in Argentina, in the Patagonia region.

Given the size of the armadillo and the fact that the giant armadillo, (Priodontes giganteus), is not known in Argentina beyond the Chaco, so experts speculated that it could have been a surviving glyptodont.

This caught the attention of the scientific community, which investigated the case, hoping to find reliable evidence, however, Zoologist Iván T. Sanderson discovered that the story was a lively fraud, a "ninth hand" tale that originated from an unknown source in the Argentine embassy in Mexico, reaching the ears of scientific magazines that took it for real.

This case is one of many deceptions regarding living beings that exist, we cannot blame people from the past for it either, since at that time news and access to information were too difficult to obtain, Thank you for reading, this time I can't leave links since this case is so old and ambiguous, there are no sources on the internet that contain it.
