A cow, an antelope or something else

The mysterious kting voar of Indochina

The bovid family is a large clade, quite genetically diverse, in it we can list cows, antelopes and goats, this being a quite genetically complex relationship, with the bovine families being the most diverse and impressive (I will leave a link where this relationship is better explained for those who have doubts).

But this family has several mysterious members, such as the kting voar, a mysterious bovine from Indochina, thank you for reading, I hope you support and follow this project, without further ado, let's get started.

The mysterious kting voart

With the proposed scientific name Pseudonovibos spiralis but commonly known as kting voar, (in Vietnamese: Bò sừng xoắn), it is a supposed member of the bovidae family, possibly from the Bovida or Antilopini tribe, native to Cambodia and Vietnam.

It is described as an animal similar to a cow with spotted fur, sometimes having strange relationships with snakes depending on the story, although its most peculiar feature is its twisted horns, up to 45 cm long.

The story of the discovery of this animal was extremely interesting.

History

This animal was discovered by zoologist Wolfgang Peter in a market in Ho Ci Minh City in 1994; where he saw a strange pair of horns that were unlike any he had seen before. They were approximately 18 long, strongly spiraled, blackish in color, and their upper parts were very open, so not assigning them to something I decided to take a photograph, Here we can see one of the horns and get an idea:

After generating controversy by not looking like anything, Peter, in the company of another zoologist made an expedition to southern Vietnam Here they managed to discover eight pairs Of these peculiar horns, a pair became the type specimen for the formal description, published by Peter and Feiler later in 1994, although its owner was still invisible as a new species since it did not agree with the bovines known until now, added to the fact that the locals in the Vietnamese districts of Kon Tum, Dac Lac and Ban Me Thuot revealed that they were familiar with this creature.

According to the natives, this one weighs between 440 and 660 pounds, measures between 3.5 and 4 feet at the withers and is said to be somewhat bovine in its basic form, being taller and more slender than a banteng or a domestic cow and has legs like those of the sambar deer, as well as a well-developed coat, which is stated to be uniformly grayish black or dark red, depending on whether it is shy, rare, Quick-footed and agile, given to standing on its hind legs to eat tree leaves, it lives in small family groups in the middle of the mountainous dipterocarp forests of the region, it being evidently therefore, although it has successfully eluded scientific detection, this solitary animal is no stranger to the people of the region.

After this, several possible remains have appeared and have been donated to museums and the memory of this animal has been traced even to Chinese zoology texts from the 16th century XVI, but the question remains, does it exist or existed?.

Uncertainty and conclusions

It may very well have existed, but it is puzzling, it was once most common in Vietnam, but it has been hunted so heavily there that it predominantly survives today across the border in Cambodia, although DNA analysis has also said it could be a relative of goats, such tests have also been said to have turned up crossed and even trite results, giving results that possibly some are a fraud, there is also a photograph, which we will see:

Renowned zoologists have analyzed the photo, without finding a clear answer, due to never finding a living individual or proof more than just horns and stories have not been able to give a clear answer, with his name being made invalid until it is guaranteed that this mysterious person exists or existed and elusive animal, it is a shame that perhaps this mysterious creature has disappeared, as a result of its use in traditional Chinese medicine, as well as for consumption, becoming extinct before even being described, who knows how many species went like this, without even having met them.
