Paintings of mysterious birds

Gallery of paintings of mysterious birds by Jacques Barraband

Here is a gallery of the art of Jacques Barraband (or Pierre-Paul Barraband), who was a French zoological illustrator and botanist, known for his realistic depictions of tropical birds..

His images were based on mounted specimens and his illustration was considered the most accurate made in the early 19th century, his works being quite popular today, but it is little considered that this painter managed to capture species of birds that are unknown to the modern eye, Here I leave you the pieces that deserve to be appreciated.

A type of mysterious and unnamed bird of paradise
But it is very reminiscent of current species, it is suspected that this is a hybrid

What the painter called orange jay

This unnamed bird, but reminiscent of the rostchild's lobed bird, another mysterious species that we will talk about in another article, although they say it could be a juvenile bird

This strange bird, which also does not resemble any living species or at least that I know of.

This species, which slightly reminds me of swallows, although also having the morphology of the cardinal family.

What they call buffoon touraco, although it bears no resemblance to the modern birds of the same name or perhaps it is just a misinterpretation.

An unidentified type of toucan, and although there are similar species, there are none that are directly similar to this one.

The 12-stringed bird of paradise, another mysterious species

Another strange bird of paradise but that vaguely reminds me of the clouded bird, perhaps they are relatives or a misinterpretation.

A small bird of striking color

(Sorry for the poor quality, some of these are difficult to obtain safely)

This thing that I don't know what it is

An Egyptian orange duck

It is very interesting to analyze this work and see these birds, see the painting techniques used, but it is also intriguing about their identity, and if they are misinterpretations or they existed.

It is beautiful and sad to see ancient art, and to think, how many species have gone like this, in absolute silence, without us knowing a little about them, that is why I started this project to make visible such hypothetical species that deserve to be better known and disseminated.
